One of the best things about the New Year is having a fresh start not only for you and your loved ones, but for your home as well. Updating the look of your living space need not hurt your budget. Here are quick, easy, and affordable ways it a makeover in time for new beginnings.

1. Freshen up lamps.

Get new shades in unconventional styles.

Give your lamps a quick makeover with new shades in different shapes, sizes, or colors.

2. Update your traditional window treatments.

Sunshine 100 City Plaza Living Room
We’re loving the classic window drapes (and that sleek, contemporary lamp) in this unit at Sunshine 100 City Plaza in Pioneer Street, Mandaluyong.

You can even make your own using fabrics with funky colors and patterns. Divisoria and textile shops offer hundreds of choices at wholesale prices.

3. Repeating patterns is a classic decorating tip.

Congressional Town Center The Address at Wack Wack
Bare bedroom walls at Congressional Town Center and The Address at Wack Wack became eye-catching with circle mirrors (top) and square prints (below).

Fill an empty wall with accents in the same shape.

4. Keep your drawers organized.

Dividers will help maximize the storage space in your drawers.

Maximize the space in each with drawer dividers.

5. If you’re into art, move around paintings to different walls or different rooms.

One Fabulous Place
Why not move a painting from your collection to the bathroom, like this piece at One Fabulous Place in West Avenue, Quezon City?

Your eyes will be surprised to see these pieces in new areas of your house.

6. Install battery-operated LED lights in unexpected places.

LED lighting
It’s energy efficient and adds life to your otherwise plain blank spaces.

You can place them under a console table, behind a bookshelf, or behind a painting for a gallery-inspired back light effect.

7. Add a textured rug, carpet, or even a banig to your living room.

Rosal Residences
At Rosal Residences in New Manila, Quezon City, our eyes were drawn to the carpet, which had an interesting texture and pattern. The lighting fixtures above the dining table were something different, too!

8. Small details can make a BIG difference.

33 Mahabagin
In this townhouse at 33 Mahabagin, throw pillows in bright red contrasted beautifully with the predominantly gray interiors. The fresh orchids on the dining table completed the table setting.

How about placing beautiful coasters on your dining table, a striking wall clock, a vase filled with fresh flowers, new throw pillows or a bowl of fresh fruits in season?

9. Play around with colors.

Rose Quartz and Serenity are 2016’s trendiest colors, according to the Pantone Color Institute.

Instead of repainting an entire room, just paint one wall in an unexpected color like red, orange, or dark blue. You could also paint the insides of bookshelves in a striking color for an interesting contrast.

You could also accent your home with pieces in what the Pantone Color Institute says are the hottest colors for 2016: Rose Quartz and Serenity (think pale pink and powder blue). We’ll be seeing more of soft, pastel hues next year.

10. Add tassels or fringes to throw pillows, lamp shades, and curtains.

It will make your decor look fancier, too.

Tassels can give your curtains a new lease on life.

11. Re-arrange accents into themes.

design arrangement
Arrange accessories into themes, such as color.

For example, all teapots could be in one clear cabinet while all blue pieces can be displayed in one corner.

12. Perk up your bathroom.

New shower curtains are also welcome!

You can add new storage units for your towels, robes, and other supplies. Or include other vibrant elements.

13. Change the color of your light bulbs.

Residencia Sikatuna
Yellow light bulbs give this living room at Residencia Sikatuna a more intimate feel.

For a more romantic feel, change your basic white to a soft yellow hue. You can even go eco-friendly.

14. Create your own indoor herb or succulent garden.

Start your own indoor herb garden now.

Plants make living spaces extra cozy, too.

15. Replace the drawer and cabinet knobs and pulls in your kitchen, bath, bedroom, or on a furniture piece.

You can even DIY!

Be bold and experiment with their styles and shapes; they don’t have to match all the time!

16. Enlarge favorite photos and turn these into wall art.

Sunshine 100 City Plaza
Shutterbugs can supersize photos and transform these into a mural like this one at Sunshine 100 City Plaza.

Enjoy looking at your most memorable moments.

17. Brighten up any room by hanging a mirror directly opposite the window.

Enjoy the warm rays of the sun.

Let the sunshine come in your rooms.

18. Make room for the new things and experiences coming your way by removing unnecessary clutter.

Keep only the things that spark joy in you.

Gather old magazines, toys, and books lying around but are no longer used and donate these to charities you support.
