Having a pet can be a very fun and fulfilling experience – coming home to a furry friend wagging its tail and looking very excited and happy to see you can melt away all the stress you’ve been feeling at work.

This warm fuzzy feeling, however, can be wiped out when you see chewed-up shoes and cables and scratches on the furniture. Worse, they may eat something they shouldn’t have and end up in the hospital (hello, vet bills!).

Be a responsible pet owner and create a safe environment for your pets with these tips in mind, which will also help make sure your belongings are out of harm’s way.

dog bed

Bedroom

  • Keep cosmetics and medicine that might be on the bedside table out of reach.
  • Keep clothes, slippers, and shoes in a closet where your dog and cat can see them and chew (or pee!) on them.
  • Store chargers and other electrical cords in a safe place when not in use.
  • Put away any small toys that can choke your pet.

Bathroom

  • Place medicines, toiletries, and cleaning supplies on high shelves.
  • Keep the lid seat down to keep your pet from drinking harmful chemicals in the water.

Kitchen

  • Make sure trash cans are securely covered so that pets can’t play with any refuse and scatter them around the house.
  • Keep all food inside cabinets, the refrigerator, or in sealed containers that are out of reach.

Living Room

  • Store things that your pet can knock over an break – such as picture frame, vases, and figurines, in high shelves and out of reach.
  • If your dog sheds heavily, cover your couch with a blanket, or shawl – cleaning up will be easier afterward.
  • Provide your cat with a scratching post as an alternative to the legs of your chairs and tables or the back of the sofa. A good scratching post has a rough texture that your cat can claw at.
  • Keep dangling wires from TVs and stereos and video consoles out of reach.

Garage and Garden

  • Make sure all doors and gates are closed when not in use.
  • Keep sharp tools and toxic chemicals out of reach.
  • Slowly back your car out of the garage to make sure none of your pets are in the way.
  • Check your fence or gate for any holes your pets can squeeze into to get out of the house. Nothing spells heartbreak than a lost doggie or kitty.
