Cagayan de Oro – City of Golden Friendship

Located at the mouth of the majestic Cagayan River, Cagayan de Oro City is northern Mindanao's largest city and the island's foremost seaport. It is the economic, educational, and administrative center of a sprawling metropolis that occupies the area around Macajalar Bay, a deep-water harbor for oceangoing vessels. With 25 kilometers of coastline, it was a major trading post during colonial times and has since become home to a variety of cultures from all over the country.

Northern Mindanao's Boom Town

Cagayan de Oro is considered a melting pot of different cultural and ethnic influences, thus earning for itself the nickname of "City of Golden Friendship". It is home to more than 600,000 residents, and prides itself in the presence of excellent sea and land infrastructure that have served as the catalysts to the city's rise as an economic powerhouse. To the northwest stands the newly-built Laguindingan International Airport, serving domestic flights.

Despite the rapid growth of the population, the city has strived to take care of its natural environment. Mangroves line Macajalar Bay, and tourists enjoy whitewater rafting and kayaking expeditions in the Cagayan River's rapids. The outskirts of Cagayan de Oro City offer opportunities for hiking and mountain climbing, as the city is located between the bay and the mountains of Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon. Thus, nature adventures are accessible year-round.

The city is home to many distinguished colleges and universities. Xavier University, one of the country's leading educational institutions, has campuses all over the city, while the main campus of Mindanao University of Science and Technology, a prominent public university, is located in Lapasan district.
